Alpha Gamma Rho Alumni

Early minutes of The Alumni Corporation from 1937

The earliest records of the Corporation are from the Annual Meeting held on November 6, 1937 at the Chapter House. The President was Brother Dearborn. At that meeting the Executive Committee of the Corporation was discontinued and there duties were given to the Finance Committee made up of five brothers who would meet at least four times a year. The Finance Committee was appointed by the President. At that meeting Paul Blood was elected President, George “Newt” Weeks (the grandfather of Brother Allen Smith) was elected Vice President. Jesse Hepler was the Treasurer. Nick Colovos was one of the five brothers appointed to the Finance Committee.

In 1938 the Annual Meeting was held on November 12th. The interest rate on notes held by brothers was increased from 3.5% to 5%. Brother Hepler was elected to serve as Treasurer for an indefinite period. All other officers were re-elected.

In 1939 the Annual Meeting was held on November 11th.   The officers were again re-elected and the Corporation went on record as not being in favor of having a House Mother

In 1940 the Annual Meeting was held on Homecoming Day. Paul Scripture who had been serving as Secretary was elected President and Nick Colovos became the Secretary. Newt Weeks continued as V.P. A committee was appointed to try and collect money owed by alumni.

In 1941 the Annual Meeting was held on November 8th, which was Homecoming Day. About 50 members were present. Brothers Eastman and Morrow praised the work of the officers and commented on the fine financial condition of the chapter.

There are no minutes in the book for 1942. On the page following the minutes of 1941 are the minutes of a special meeting of Omega Chapter, Alpha Gamma Rho Corporation, held at the Chapter House on May 8, 1943 at 8 pm. There were 7 active and alumni members present, including Brothers Hepler, Morrow and Weeks. The purpose of the meeting was to consider the proposal made by the University to take over the Fraternity property for the remainder of the war. The University would assume the financial obligations of the Fraternity. “It was the consensus of the group that the Fraternity should participate in the foregoing plan when satisfactory cooperative arrangements had been worked out and approved by the University and Faculty.”

“By vote, the Corporation President was authorized to appoint a committee to be empowered to act for the Fraternity in all matters pertaining to the properties of the Chapter for the duration. Such committee to consist of the Executive committee, the Fraternity Advisor and such other members as the President may appoint”

“It was voted that the aforesaid committee should prepare an inventory of the Chapter properties and condition of the same, to be submitted as evidence of the Fraternity holdings as of June 1, 1943.”“It was also voted to authorize the committee to make inspection of the house and property.”

The next meeting recorded was the 1946 Annual Meeting, held on Alumni Day, June 15, 1946. The meeting was called to order by President Fred Allen at 11:15 in the lecture room of the Dairy Building. The secretary’s report was omitted due to the absence of Brother Homes, the foregoing indicates which elections had been held at some previous time, but is not recorded in the minute book.

Brother Kenneth Morrow was now Treasurer and his report indicated that the Corporation was in “very satisfactory financial standing”. The fraternity was to be taken over by its members on July 1st 1946, as the family then living in the house would be out by then. Brother Hepler felt that the Fraternity House could be filled by active members. Members were urged to send in the names of likely candidates. Fred Allen was re-elected as President. Paul Blood was the V.P., Fredrick Smalley was Secretary and Ken Morrow Treasurer. The names of 20 members were recorded as being present.

A second Annual Meeting was held on Homecoming Day, October 19, 1946, at the Chapter House. Brother Hepler brought up the issue of the interest rate on notes held by alumni, as the banks were only charging 4%. After discussion it was agreed that it would be acceptable to cut the rate from 5% to 4%.

“The question of the Alpha Gamma Rho history was discussed and it was decided to accumulate material as quickly as possible up to the present class and then wait two years so as to include the records of the future pledges. It was also decided to include the records of those who did not join the forces as it was deemed that their work here at home was just as vital to victory as active combat.”

The only change in officers was that Brother Gordon Percival became the Secretary. After the meeting the brothers enjoyed cider and doughnuts, served by the board department.

There are no records for the 1947 Annual Meeting.

The Annual Meeting of 1948 was held on Homecoming Day, October16th, at the Chapter House. Brother Morrow reported that a furniture fund was to be set up to be used for future furniture replacement. There was $77.15 in unpaid telephone toll charges. It was left to the actives to handle. Nicholas Colovos brought up the issue of the high cost of belonging to a National Fraternity. Noble Ruler Roland Harwood said that he would discuss the issue with the chapter at the next meeting. Brother Dayton Henson was elected President and Charles Russell V.P. there was no change in the other two offices.

Cider and doughnuts were again served and alumni had a enjoyable time talking over old times.

The Annual Meeting of 1949 was held on Homecoming Day, October 8th, at the Chapter House. Brother Harold Presby was elected President and Brother Walter Bodwell V.P. the other officers remained the same. The minutes show for the first time in many years the mention of the “Finance and Advisory Council” along with its members. Brother Morrow reported that; 51 members had contributed $288 to the special fund drive.  There was discussion and disagreement over having the House Treasurer pay the bills. By a vote of the Corporation it was decided to retain the present system of having the Corporation Treasurer pay the bills.

Brother Henson spoke about the fund drive. He stated that there were 271 members of the Corporation and that it was one of the strongest Alumni groups on campus. There was discussion and disagreement over whether to have mandatory or voluntary dues, the motion to have a voluntary contribution of $5 failed. It was then moved that: “an annual voluntary contribution be made each year for the specific project of improvement of the house, with any surplus to go into the building fund.” The motion passed. “Bro. Colovos brought last year’s discussion on belonging to a National organization. Bro. Baker reported that the active chapter still wanted to be National.”

There are no records of the 1950 meeting.

The Annual Meeting of 1951 was held as Simpson’s Pavilion in Madbury on May 23rd. This is the first it is recorded that a banquet was held. Dayton “Doc” Henson reported on a memorial for Fred “Duke” Peaslee, Mrs. Gertrude Peaslee had offered $1000 to be used “as some sort of memorial”. “Red” Eastman moved and Nick Colovos seconded to have an Alumni Memorial Room, the motion passed. Alumni present pledged $880 for the memorial room. Brother Walter Bodwell was elected President and Brother Kenneth Cressey V.P., the other two officers remained the same. There was interest in having an Alumni Dance. Group pictures were taken. Brothers then visited until about midnight.

On October 2, 1951 some of the local Alumni met with the Corporation Officers. The members of the Finance and Advisory Committee were announced. There was an inspection of the house and it was decided not to deepen the cellar and enlarge the playroom. It was however decided to put a 20’by 30’ addition onto the rear of the dinning room, with the basement of the addition to be used as the Chapter Memorial Room. In the future dancing will be confined to the enlarged dinning room and the furniture can then be left in the living room. The second floor addition will be used to expand the sleeping deck. The third floor deck would then be converted to study rooms to increase the number of brothers in house. A building committee of Brothers Colovos, Hepler, Percival, Skoglund, Morrow, Harwood, Henson and Blood as chairman was appointed. Brothers Henson and Skoglund were in charge of the fund drive.

On January 11, 1952 the building Committee met at the Chapter House. There was discussion on who to contract with for the project as well as different types of material that might be used. It was decided that the Memorial Room would have a concrete floor with asphalt tiles and a recessed trophy case in the wall. The Executive Committee was to meet at a later date to set the budget. They entered into a financial agreement with Mr. Leaver to draw up the plans etc. Brother Skoglund was to meet with the actives to see about raising the house rent.

On May 2, 1952 Chairman Blood and Percival met with Mr. Brodie about drawing up the plans, as Mr. Learver turned the work over to Mr. Fitz, who never got to it. Mr. Brodie was to charge by the hour.

The Annual Meeting of 1952 was held on May 14th at Simpson’s Pavilion. The mortgage stood at $1,305. There was $3,344.12 in the savings account. The total pledges for the memorial room stood at $2,263.00. A report on the work of the building committee was given by Brothers Percival and Colovos. Brother Benjamin Westcott was elected V.P. the other three officers were re-elected. Edward Eddy gave a good talk on his predictions for U.N.H. in 1965. The Lesher twins then showed slides of the U.N.H. campus.

The Annual Meeting of 1953 was held on April 15th at the Chapter House. There were 130 brothers present who enjoyed a banquet put on by the Board Department. Brother Morrow served as toastmaster and started off by having the brothers stand up by class. Brother Paul Blood gave the report of the building committee. Brother L. Phelps Latimer was elected V.P. and the other officers were re-elected. The active chapter presented Brother Blood with a hammer and extension cord as a token of their thanks for his help on the addition. Representative John Pillsbury the Majority Leader of the House gave a talk on “Legislation Pertaining to Agriculture and how it affects you” Under the part of program listed as “Bull Session” Brothers Skoglund, J.R. Hepler and Colovos made remarks. Brother Red Eastman moved that; “the Brothers stand in a moment of silence in memory of those who were no longer with us”.

The 1954 Annual Meeting was held on April 22 at the Chapter House. After the Banquet a group picture was taken on the front porch. Brother Blood reported on the completion of the addition. Brother L. Phelps Latimer was elected President, Brother Eric McNab was elected V.P. the Secretary and Treasurer were re-elected. U.N. H. President Chandler gave a talk on the College of Agriculture.

In 1955 the Annual Meeting was held on April 21st, the first time the meeting was held on the actual chartering date. A banquet of barbequed chicken was held at the Chapter House. Brother Hilton Boynton served as Toastmaster; he called on Brother Hazen Gale who spoke on “Tail-checking”. Brother Skoglund was introduced at the past Faculty
Advisor and Brother Boynton as the new Faculty Advisor. There was discussion about having $2 annul dues, it was voted to send a questionnaire to all alumni. Brother Gale presented plans “for a new kitchen and equipment, fixing up of the old kitchen, a new furnace, and a first floor bathroom”. It was voted that if the Board Department made a $500 profit and gave it to the Corporation, a new kitchen would be added onto the house and the old kitchen would become a study room. A toilet would be installed on the first floor and the furnace would be replaced. The total to be spent would be at the discretion of the Finance Committee.

Brother Eric McNab was elected President and Brother Charles Russell was elected V.P., the other officers were re-elected. Brother Gale presented Brother Hepler with the watch which Brother Hepler had been presented in 1949 for his 25 years of service, this time is was suitably engraved. He then presented Brother Skoglund with a desk pen for his service as Faculty Advisor. The plaque for the Fred Peaslee Room was then dedicated in the name of all deceased Brothers. Grand President Dean Freeman was then introduced; he gave “an inspiring talk on AGR.  He said that the word which exemplified the brothers of AGR was “enthusiasm” and that we should try to stand a little taller, see a little further and see what we can do for our fellow men”.

The 1956 Annual Meeting was held at the Chapter House in April. Noble Ruler Wallie Mack Jr. reported on winning the Song Fest and the good scholastic standing. Brother Hepler was called on and he told some stories about Hilton Boynton, which he claimed were true. He then reviewed the founding of the Chapter.  On April 24, 1958 the Annual Meeting was held at the chapter House. Noble Ruler Ed Hill reported on the Officers Training School and the activities of the Chapter. Brother Skoglund was again serving as Faculty Advisor and Hilton Boynton had retired from that role. Brother Skoglund spoke about his hope for an alumni picnic during the coming summer which would include families and active brothers. Treasurer Morrow reported that “Grand Treasurer Bresee advised that we should incorporate under a new charter so that we would not have to pay corporation tax on any profits”.

Brother Hepler “read a letter from Bro. Fredrick Sibley stating that in his will he was leaving $1000 for an AGR scholarship to be administered by the chapter”. It was voted that committee of four be appointed “to provide a suitable plaque on which the winners would be engraved”. Brother Hepler’s intentions were that “the committee should be composed of those brothers who disguised as gunmen at one time had waylaid and robbed Bro. Sibley of his cherished watch and pocketbook. Both items were later returned intact. However there were really only 3 culprits instead of 4 as Red Eastman had to attend Bible Class. This left brothers Eliot Stevens, Nick Colovos and Bunger Baldwin to carry out the nefarious deed”. Brother Russell volunteered to provide the plaque and it was voted to delay the plan for a year.

Elliot Stevens was elected President, Nick Colovos V.P. and the other officers were re-elected. Treasure Morrow reported on Grand Treasurer Bresee’s suggestion that Article II be changed so that the Corporation could be tax exempt. “The correspondence with Washington suggested that we be called a club so as to be tax exempt. This was frowned upon”. A motion to approve the changes was amended so as to be voted on at the next annual meeting the motion as amended was adopted. Nicholas Colovos was elected President, Charles Russell V.P. and the other two officers were re-elected. It was voted to increase the fire insurance from $15,000 to $30,000 and that a liability insurance policy be purchased.

The 1960 Annual Meeting was held on April 21st. The guest speaker was Dr. Paul Bruns head of the UNH Forestry Department; he discussed life in Montana and assured the brothers that despite all the drinking, gambling and cold weather Montana was really a nice place to live. He also gave a colored slide show of the mountain splendor, timber and scenery. Noble Ruler Phil Whiteman reported on the house activities, he noted that AGR won the Woodsman Weekend led by Brother Dan Noyes. The Chapter placed second in bowling and did well in softball and football. Last spring the Chap won the scholastic honors, but slipped to second place in the fall. Brother George Buzzell, the winner of the UNH Talent Show, played several humorous selections on his electric guitar.

Faculty Advisor Skoglund reported that “the AGR boys run the house with very little help and are tops on campus. He was however concerned about the difficulties in filling pledge quotas due to decreasing enrollment in the college of Ag…” Brother Morrow reported that the $7000 mortgage would be paid off in about 5 years. In order to deal with the University mandate it was voted that the “president appoint a committee consisting of 3 members of the Alumni Corp. and 2 additional members to be in charge of enlarging the House by a mortgage not to exceed$25,000 if deemed necessary.” John Perkins was elected President, Robert Clifford, V.P. and Gordon “Pat” Percival was re-elected Secretary and Kenneth ‘Prof” Morrow was re-elected Treasurer. This was to be the last term for both Brother Percival, who had served since at least 1946.

In 1966 the Annual Meeting was held on April 21st. Twenty six alumni attended, with Brother Joe Horn being the most senior. voted to approve 23 million. Treasurer Fowler reported that the Alumni dues of five dollars were not working. He stated that when five dollars is asked for, that is all that is given. His opinion was that future dues should be on a voluntary basis and sent to undergraduates. During the past year the undergraduate treasurer had taken on the responsibility for room and board billing and associated expenses.

Under new business “Brother Skoglund moved for the chapter to obtain legal council to revise the charter, so we can become tax exempt. Brother Stevens amended the motion to form an Alpha Gamma Rho Foundation.” The amendment was adopted and the motion as amended was also approved. Brother Marshall moved to have the President appoint a committee to carryout the motion. Prof Morrow, Dr. Skoglund and Paul Janetos were appointed after the motion was approved.

There was discussion about the possibility of the University buying the Chapter House. There was then much discussion about moving the date and or location of the Annual Meeting to increase attendance. Brother Marshall moved that a card be sent out with the next Crescent asking for ideas. The motion passed.

Brother DeMerritt reported on the availability of land and what needed to be done to remodel the present house.
